Sperrinview Special School, Dungannon

Welcome

Welcome to Sperrinview School!

Sperrinview School currently caters for 147 pupils with severe learning difficulties, from pre-school to 19 years. The pupils are drawn from South and East Tyrone.  Sperrinview is a split-site, co-educational, inter-denominational, controlled, day school.  Most primary age pupils and all post-primary pupils are taught on the Dungannon Campus.  Two groups of pre-school, one group of primary age pupils and one post-primary pupil will be taught on the Cookstown campus for the 23-24 school year.

Due to insufficient accommodation, it is not possible for Sperrinview to offer places to all pupils who have been statemented for Sperrinview.  These pupils will be based across 4 schools in SP EYFS (Specialised Provision for Early Years and Foundation Stage) Classes in St Patrick’s PS Annaghmore, Dungannon PS, St Patrick’s PS Dungannon and St Patrick’s PS Donaghmore.  Sperrinview will provide support to these schools.

Sperrinview’s main purpose-built school, located less than one mile from the centre of Dungannon, was first occupied in September 1996 and officially opened in September 1997.  There have been several extensions in the intervening period.  A teaching Pod was placed onsite in Dungannon last Summer to accommodate the needs of 2 pupils.

It is hoped that EA will be able to secure and prepare further accommodation, which will meet the needs of the pupils from September 2024.  This will be an interim measure, until a more permanent solution can be found.

The campuses are well equipped, and have several specialised rooms including one for each of the therapists, ie Speech and Language, Occupational and Physiotherapist.  In Dungannon there is also a sensory garden, woodland classroom, tree trail and maths trails as well as recently upgraded specialised play areas [including a green gym], a sensory intervention room, white room, soft playroom and a book nook.

The Principal, 2 Vice Principals, 22.6 full-time equivalent and 59.6 full-time equivalent classroom assistants, combine to plan and implement programmes for pupils.

In addition, the therapists [referred to above] have input, as per recommendations in pupils’ statements of special educational needs.  A number of other people including the secretaries, caretakers, school meals staff, supervisory assistants, cleaners, bus escorts and drivers also make valuable contributions to school life.

The main school population is divided, on the basis of age, into 23 classes.  Circumstances have dictated that there are a small number of exceptions to this arrangement.

The Junior section of the school includes pupils from PS1, PS2, J1, J2, J3, J4, J5, J6, Sunbeam, Sunlight and Rainbow.  Middle school consists of Classes Sunshine, MA1, MA2, M1 and M2 and the senior school comprises Classes Starlight, SA1, SA2, SA3, S1 and T1.  We also have a Nurture Room - Butterfly.

Pupils are given opportunities to explore the wider community through environmental visits.  Participation in events such as the local festival and feis, visits to theatres and involvement in events organised with/for other schools/colleges, provide opportunities to integrate.  Work experience placements and careers education programmes, including visits to local industries, are further examples of community links.
